Over 9,000 owl calls have been detected by citizen scientists in
Hoot Detective. Just between us ;) the highest number of owl calls have been heard at
Boyagin Nature Reserve, WA and
Arkaba, SA. Both seem to have a healthy population of the beautifully mournful boobook, among other owls.
If you’re keen to hear a barking owl try
Samford Valley, QLD. For the masked owl go to
Little Llangothlin, NSW. We’ve added the southern boobook to
Newhaven, NT as so many people told us they’d heard it there. If you need more hoot-spiration check out
Ann and Nate owling around on News Breakfast.
Also this week: the new season of
Cosmic Vertigo is being released at the special Science Week rate of one episode per day! It’s a head-spinning, cracking conversation between Karlie Noon and Corey Tutt about the incomprehensible scale of space.
Hopefully you’re lucky enough to be able to go to a Science Week event, but with so much of the country in lockdown that might be a dim fantasy.
Our Science Week-themed iview collection has recommended science TV, and there’s also an
ABC Kids iview collection with plenty of science-themed content for kids.
